The Preacher's Lectionary Notebook - A Litany for the Season of Epiphany on Psalm 40:1-11
The Second Sunday after the Epiphany (Year A)
Leader: We waited patiently for the LORD; in the long night, in the quiet ache of hope. People: And the LORD inclined, hearing our cry and drawing near. Leader: From the pit of desolation, from the mire of fear and despair, People: God lifted us up, set our feet upon a rock, and made our steps sure. Leader: A new song has been placed upon our lips, a song of praise to our God. People: Many see and fear, and put their trust in the LORD, for the light has appeared. Leader: Blessed are those who trust the LORD, who do not turn to false lights or empty promises. People: Blessed are those who walk by the true light, revealed in word and deed. Leader: O LORD our God, your wonders are too many to count, your thoughts toward us beyond measure. People: You are not hidden, but made known in mercy, revealed in faithfulness and love. Leader: Sacrifice and offering you do not desire, but ears opened to hear your voice. People: Burnt offerings and sin offerings you do not require, but lives awakened to your will. Leader: Then we say, “Here we are,” for the light has summoned us. People: We delight to do your will, O God; your law is written upon our hearts. Leader: We proclaim good news in the great congregation; we do not restrain our lips. People: We bear witness to the light, declaring your righteousness for all to see. Leader: We speak of your faithfulness and your salvation, not hiding your steadfast love and truth. People: For in Jesus Christ, your mercy has taken flesh, your truth has dwelt among us. Leader: Do not withhold your mercy from us, O LORD. People: Let your steadfast love and faithfulness shine upon us always, guiding us in the light revealed.
